I received and read the April 27 Meeting report and noted under section 8c there was a discussion about HAM-NET Mesh Networking. This technology is properly called "Broadband-Hamnet". A previous name for it is "High Speed Multi-Media MESH (HSMM-MESH)".

It appears that some mistakenly think there would be a need to coordinate such wireless networks. From my understanding, this is not the case. By design, all Broadband-Hamnet Networks operate on channel 1 (center frequency of 2.412 GHz). If someone has set up something on another channel they are not following the established nomenclature of Broadband-Hamnet, and therefore not part of it.

While WiFi channels 1 through 6 are completely within the 2.4 GHz amateur band on a shared use bases, the use of these frequencies are open to anyone who visits Wal-Mart and purchases a router, wireless printer, or any other wireless device. Further, anyone (ham or non-ham) can purchase WiFi hardware to establish a network wireless bridge between two distant sites and still be within the limits of FCC Part 15 rules. Anyone can do this -- not just hams. So there may indeed be multiple networks operating on a given channel in the same area. They coexist with some reduction in throughput and a higher noise floor. Hams can break through the noise with higher gain antennas and more ERP. Attempting to manage the WiFi channel usage, in my opinion, would be a pointless exercise. There are many other users of this spectrum who are beyond the reach of WPRC.
If you would like to learn more about Broadband-Hamnet, there is a basic info page on the group's web site at http://www.broadband-hamnet.org/just-starting-read-this.html.
